Gibson is the only American wrestler to win World medals in three international styles: Greco-Roman, freestyle and sambo.
Gibson was an NSCIF champion in 1972, but graduated HS prior to the creation of the CIF championships. He was a 2x NCAA All-American in wrestling, taking 2nd place at HWT in 1975 and 1976. He was also the starting linebacker for the University of Oregon football team.
He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1978 and was assigned to Marine Corps Base Quantico and the All-Marine wrestling team.
He won freestyle World silver medals in 1981 and 1983. And an Olympic silver medal in Greco-Roman in the 1984 Los Angeles games.
He retired from the Marine Corps in 2003 as a master sergeant. Greg Gibson is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
